Green Fire Farm Partnership with DUHC

We are pleased to partner with Grady and Linda, the farmers at Green Fire Farm, for the second year in a row. We are expanding the program from 21 weeks to 25 weeks, and we are offering an additional pick-up in Arcata, in addition to continuing the pick-up at the Duck House in Eureka.

Green Fire Farm is a certified organic farm located along the Trinity River in the Hoopa Valley of northeastern Humboldt County. Begun in 2001, Green Fire Farm has established a reputation for high quality produce.

A wide diversity of vegetables, fruits, and herbs from Green Fire Farm’s intensively cultivated fields and gardens are available at area farmers’ markets, grocery stores, health food stores, food co-ops, and in many fine restaurants.

The Klamath-Trinity Joint Unified School District purchases produce from Green Fire Farm for its school cafeterias, and the farm frequently donates vegetables to Food For People, Humboldt County’s food bank.

Beginning the first week in June of 2009, a weekly box of fresh, seasonal, organic produce will be available in Eureka or Arcata through a collaboration between Democracy Unlimited of Humboldt County and Green Fire Farm.

The cost for a "share" of the season's harvest (25 weeks, June 2 - November 23) is $475-$525 sliding scale ($19-21/week)

Over the course of the season, shareholders will receive an assortment of fruits and vegetables as they ripen, including:

What is Community Supported Agriculture?
CSA is a partnership of mutual commitment between a farm and a community of supporters which provides a direct link between the production and consumption of food. Supporters cover a farm's yearly operating budget by purchasing a share of the season's harvest. CSA members make a commitment to support the farm throughout the season, and assume the costs, risks and bounty of growing food along with the farmer or grower. Members help pay for seeds, fertilizer, water, equipment maintenance, labor, etc. In return, the farm provides a healthy supply of seasonal fresh produce throughout the growing season. Becoming a member creates a responsible relationship between people and the food they eat, the land on which it is grown and those who grow it.

This mutually supportive relationship between local farmers, growers and community members helps create an economically stable farm operation in which members are assured the highest quality produce, often at below retail prices. In return, farmers and growers are guaranteed a reliable market for a diverse selection of crops.

Supporting local organic farmers directly through CSA is one way to decrease dependence on corporate agriculture and decreases dependence on fossil fuels (it makes a BIG difference when your food only travels 10 miles or so to reach your table vs. hundreds or thousands of miles!) A share in a local, organic farm is the only share that anyone should own!
